Step-by-Step
- Heat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
- Whisk the flour, baking soda, and fine salt together in a medium bowl.
- Beat the softened butter, granulated sugar, and packed light brown sugar in a large bowl for 2–3 minutes, until light and creamy.
- Beat in the eggs one at a time, then mix in the vanilla extract.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients and mix just until combined. Do not overmix.
- Fold in the semisweet chocolate chips and chopped walnuts.
- Drop rounded tablespoons or approximately 1 1/2-tablespoon portions of dough onto the prepared baking sheets, leaving about 2 inches between cookies.
- Bake for 9–12 minutes, until the edges are golden brown and the centers still look slightly soft.
- Cool the cookies on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack.
Notes
For thicker, chewier cookies, refrigerate the dough for at least 30 minutes and up to 24 hours before baking. Toast the walnuts in a 350°F (175°C) oven for 7–10 minutes before chopping, then cool them completely before adding to the dough.
