Step-by-Step
- Drain the tuna very well, pressing out excess liquid, and place it in a medium mixing bowl. Flake the tuna gently with a fork so the pieces are loose and easy to combine.
- Add the diced or lightly mashed avocado, finely diced red onion, diced celery, and chopped cilantro or parsley to the bowl. Keep some avocado in small chunks for a varied, pleasing texture.
- Drizzle in the fresh lime juice, then season with kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper. Add Dijon mustard, minced jalapeño, or garlic powder if desired.
- Fold the mixture gently until the ingredients are combined without completely crushing the avocado. Taste and adjust the lime juice, salt, and pepper as needed.
- Serve immediately as a salad, in lettuce cups, on toast, or in a sandwich. The salad is freshest right away because the avocado will gradually darken and soften.
Notes
Use tuna packed in water and drain it thoroughly so the salad does not become watery. Add lime juice soon after cutting the avocado to provide fresh flavor and help slow browning. For the best texture and color, prepare and serve this salad immediately.
