Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 1 lb Lean ground beef
  • 1/2 cup Finely chopped onion
  • 1 15 oz can Sloppy joe sauce
  • 1 8 oz tube Refrigerated crescent-roll dough
  • 1/2 cup Shredded cheddar cheese
Optional Seasonings
  • 1/4 tsp Garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp Black pepper

Method

Step-by-Step
  1. Heat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Cook the ground beef and onion in a skillet over medium heat for 6 to 8 minutes, breaking the beef into small crumbles, until no pink remains. Drain any excess fat.
  3. Stir in the sloppy joe sauce, garlic powder, and black pepper if using. Simmer for 3 to 5 minutes, until hot and slightly thickened, then let the filling cool for several minutes.
  4. Separate the crescent dough into 8 triangles. Place about 2 tablespoons of the beef mixture near the wide end of each triangle and sprinkle with cheddar cheese.
  5. Fold or roll the dough around the filling, pinching the seams closed as well as possible. For a firmer seal, lightly brush the dough edges with water before pressing them together.
  6. Place the pockets on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 12 to 15 minutes, until puffed and golden brown. Rest for 3 to 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

Do not overfill the crescent triangles, since about 2 tablespoons of filling helps prevent leaking. For a homemade sauce, replace the canned sauce with 1 cup tomato sauce, 1/4 cup ketchup, 1 tablespoon packed brown sugar, 1 tablespoon yellow mustard, 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce, 1/2 teaspoon chili powder, 1/4 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon black pepper; simmer with the beef for about 5 minutes.
