- Leave the butter at room temperature until very soft but not melted. For a milder, sweeter garlic flavor, gently sauté the minced garlic in 1 teaspoon of the butter for 1–2 minutes, then cool it completely.
- Add the softened butter, garlic, parsley, chives, salt, pepper, and optional lemon juice and zest to a mixing bowl.
- Mix thoroughly with a spoon, spatula, or hand mixer until the herbs and garlic are evenly distributed throughout the butter.
- Taste and adjust the salt, garlic, or lemon according to preference. Use immediately, or shape the butter into a log on parchment or plastic wrap, wrap tightly, and refrigerate until firm.
Notes
Store covered in the refrigerator for up to 1 week, or freeze for about 2–3 months. Slice off portions as needed. If using salted butter, reduce or omit the added salt and adjust after tasting.
