Ingredients

Breadstick Dough
  • 1 1/2 cups Warm water, about 105–110°F (40–43°C)
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons Active dry yeast
  • 2 tablespoons Granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Fine salt
  • 3 1/2 cups All-purpose flour, plus more if needed
  • 1/4 cup Unsalted butter, melted, for the dough or pan
Topping
  • 2 tablespoons Unsalted butter, melted, for brushing
  • 1/2 teaspoon Garlic powder or garlic salt
Optional Topping
  • 1-2 tablespoons Grated Parmesan or Italian seasoning

Method

Step-by-Step
  1. Stir the warm water, sugar, and active dry yeast together in a large mixing bowl. Let the mixture stand for 5–10 minutes, until foamy.
  2. Add the salt, melted butter, and about 3 1/2 cups of flour. Mix until a soft dough forms, adding only enough of the extra flour to make the dough manageable.
  3. Knead the dough by hand for 5–7 minutes or with a dough hook for about 4–5 minutes. The finished dough should feel soft and slightly tacky rather than stiff.
  4. Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover, and let it rise until doubled, usually 30–45 minutes.
  5. Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a 6–8-inch rope and arrange the ropes on a greased or parchment-lined baking sheet.
  6. Let the shaped breadsticks rest for 10–20 minutes while the oven heats to 400°F. This short rest helps the dough relax and keeps the baked breadsticks tender.
  7. Bake for 12–15 minutes, until the tops are lightly golden and the centers are cooked through. Brush the hot breadsticks immediately with melted butter and sprinkle with garlic powder, garlic salt, Parmesan, or Italian seasoning.

Notes

Add flour sparingly because slightly tacky dough produces softer breadsticks. Store cooled breadsticks in an airtight container and reheat briefly in a 300°F oven or microwave before serving.
