Step-by-Step
- Heat the refried beans and taco seasoning in a small saucepan over medium-low heat for 3–5 minutes, stirring frequently until smooth and hot. If the mixture is too thick, stir in 1–2 tablespoons of water.
- Cook the hot dogs according to package directions, using a grill, skillet, or saucepan of simmering water for about 5–7 minutes. Continue until they are heated through and lightly browned when grilling or pan-searing.
- Warm or lightly toast the split buns. Toasting helps the buns hold the warm beans and toppings while adding a pleasant crisp edge.
- Spread each warm bun with an even layer of seasoned refried beans. Place one cooked hot dog into each bun.
- Top the hot dogs with shredded cheddar cheese, finely chopped onion, chopped tomato, and shredded lettuce. Finish with salsa, sour cream, sliced jalapeños, or guacamole if desired, then serve immediately.
Notes
Heat the refried beans gently and stir often because high heat can make them stiff and cause them to stick. Toast the buns briefly for better structure. Assemble just before serving for the freshest texture.
