Chocolate-Covered Oranges: A Simple Sweet Treat

Chocolate-Covered Oranges

Fresh orange segments are dipped halfway in smooth semisweet or dark chocolate and chilled until crisp and firm. Flaky sea salt is optional but adds a lovely contrast to the sweet-tart fruit.

Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 4 whole Seedless oranges or clementines
  • 170 g (6 oz) Semisweet or dark chocolate, roughly 60–70% cocoa
Optional Ingredients
  • 1 teaspoon Coconut oil or vegetable shortening
  • As needed Flaky sea salt

Method

Step-by-Step
  1. Peel the oranges and separate them into individual segments. Remove as much excess white pith and any seeds as possible, then pat every segment extremely dry with paper towels.
  2. Line a baking sheet or large plate with parchment paper. Arrange the lined surface close to your work area so the dipped fruit can be transferred quickly.
  3. Place the chopped chocolate and coconut oil, if using, in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave in 20–30-second intervals, stirring thoroughly between each interval, until smooth; alternatively, melt it in a heatproof bowl over gently simmering water.
  4. Dip each orange segment halfway into the melted chocolate. Hold it above the bowl for a moment so excess chocolate drips back, then place the coated segment on the parchment.
  5. Sprinkle the wet chocolate lightly with flaky sea salt if desired. Refrigerate the dipped segments for 20–30 minutes, or until the coating is firm.

Notes

Drying the orange segments thoroughly is the most important step because moisture can seize the chocolate and prevent it from adhering. Store the finished treats in the refrigerator and eat within 1–2 days for the freshest texture.
