Step-by-Step
- If desired, gently toss the berries with 1–2 teaspoons of granulated or powdered sugar. Let them stand for 5–10 minutes, and drain off excess juice if the fruit becomes especially juicy.
- Whisk the sugar-free vanilla pudding mix with 2 cups of cold skim milk for about 2 minutes, or until the mixture thickens. Fold approximately half of the thawed whipped topping into the pudding until evenly combined.
- Place one-third of the angel food cake cubes in the bottom of a trifle bowl or deep glass serving bowl. Add one-third of the berries, followed by one-third of the pudding mixture.
- Repeat the cake, berry, and pudding layers twice more, aiming for even distribution so each serving includes all of the components. Spread the remaining whipped topping over the top and decorate with a few berries.
- Cover the trifle and refrigerate it for at least 1 hour. For the best texture, serve it after about 2 hours, while avoiding overnight refrigeration because the cake can become overly soft.
Notes
Use fully chilled pudding and whipped topping for firm, distinct layers. Assemble no more than 4–6 hours before serving. A variation can replace part of the whipped topping with 1 cup of nonfat vanilla yogurt, or use all fat-free whipped topping with 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract added to the pudding.
