Step-by-Step
- Peel and finely grate the ginger and turmeric. Take care when handling fresh turmeric because its bright pigment can stain fingers, cutting boards, towels, and clothing.
- Add the water, grated ginger, grated turmeric, and black pepper to a small saucepan. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil over medium heat.
- Reduce the heat and simmer for 8–10 minutes. For a stronger tea, grate the ingredients finely and use the full 10-minute simmer.
- Pour the tea through a fine-mesh strainer into two cups. Press gently on the solids if desired, but avoid forcing too much fibrous pulp through the strainer.
- Stir 1–2 teaspoons of lemon juice and 1–2 teaspoons of honey into the strained tea. Taste and adjust the sweetness or acidity, then serve hot.
Notes
Use 1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric if fresh turmeric is unavailable. Ground ginger can replace fresh ginger; use about 1/4–1/2 teaspoon. Add lemon and honey after simmering rather than boiling them to preserve the fresh lemon flavor and avoid overheating the honey.
