Ingredients

Butter Board
  • 1 cup (2 sticks/226 g) Unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 tablespoons Extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon Honey, plus more for drizzling
  • 1 teaspoon Finely grated lemon zest
  • 1 tablespoon Fresh rosemary, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon Fresh thyme, finely chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon, optional Red pepper flakes
  • 1/2 teaspoon, plus extra for finishing Flaky sea salt
Optional Toppings
  • 1/4 cup Toasted nuts, such as pistachios, walnuts, or almonds
  • 1 tablespoon Dried fruit, such as chopped dates, figs, or cranberries
  • As needed for garnish Fresh herbs, edible flowers, or additional lemon zest
For Serving
  • 1 loaf Large baguette or rustic sourdough loaf

Method

Step-by-Step
  1. Bring the butter to room temperature until it is very soft and spreadable, but do not melt it.
  2. Use a small offset spatula or the back of a spoon to spread the butter across a clean serving board in broad swipes or small mounds, leaving visible texture and gaps.
  3. Drizzle the butter with olive oil and honey, then scatter over lemon zest, rosemary, thyme, red pepper flakes, and flaky salt.
  4. Add toasted nuts, dried fruit, extra herbs, edible flowers, or additional lemon zest as desired.
  5. Serve immediately with sliced or torn bread. For advance preparation, refrigerate the finished board for up to about 1 hour, then let it soften briefly before serving.

Notes

Use salted butter only if you reduce or omit the added salt after tasting. Keep the board cool, use a food-safe wooden, marble, or slate board with a rim if possible, and provide a separate knife or small spreader.
