Step-by-Step
- Heat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Brown the ground beef and chopped onion in a skillet over medium heat, breaking the meat into small pieces as it cooks, then drain excess fat.
- Stir the condensed tomato soup and drained green beans into the cooked beef mixture. Continue heating until everything is evenly combined and hot.
- Transfer the beef mixture to a small baking dish and spread it into an even layer. Spoon the prepared mashed potatoes over the top and spread them carefully across the filling.
- Sprinkle the shredded Cheddar evenly over the mashed potatoes. For extra browning, use a fork to create ridges in the potato layer before adding the cheese.
- Bake for about 20 minutes, until the casserole is hot throughout and the Cheddar is melted. Let the pie rest for 5 minutes before serving so the layers settle slightly.
Notes
Use fairly thick mashed potatoes so they stay on top of the filling. If making mashed potatoes from scratch, season them well and add a little butter or milk for easy spreading without making them runny. Refrigerate leftovers promptly and reheat until hot throughout.
