Steamed Frozen Crab Legs

Frozen precooked snow crab or king crab legs are quickly steamed until hot, then served with lemon and melted butter for dipping.
Prep Time 5 minutes
Cook Time 6 minutes
Total Time 15 minutes
Servings: 2 servings

Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 2 pounds Frozen crab legs, preferably split snow crab or king crab clusters
Steaming Liquid
  • cups Water
Flavorings
  • 1 lemon Lemon, sliced or cut into wedges
  • 1-2 tablespoons Old Bay or other seafood seasoning, optional
For Serving
  • ½ cup Unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 clove Garlic, finely minced, optional

Method

Step-by-Step
  1. Add 1½ cups of water to a large pot, making sure the water sits just below the steamer basket or rack. Add lemon slices and optional seafood seasoning, then bring the water to a strong simmer or boil.
  2. Arrange the frozen crab legs in the steamer basket. Bend or cut the clusters as needed so the lid closes tightly without forcing the crab into the pot.
  3. Cover the pot and steam frozen snow crab for 6–8 minutes or frozen king crab for 8–10 minutes. Keep the lid closed while the crab heats so steam does not escape.
  4. Remove the crab legs carefully with tongs once the shells are hot and the meat is thoroughly warmed. Melt the butter, stir in optional minced garlic, and serve immediately with lemon wedges.

Notes

Do not thaw the precooked crab legs unless a recipe specifically requires it. Avoid prolonged steaming or boiling because overcooked crab can become tough and stick to the shell.
