Step-by-Step
- Heat the oven to 350°F and grease a 9-by-13-inch baking pan. Prepare the spice cake mix with the eggs, water, and vegetable oil according to the package directions, stirring in the optional cinnamon.
- Spread the batter evenly in the prepared pan and bake for approximately 30–35 minutes. The cake is ready when a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Let the cake cool for about 10–15 minutes, so it is still slightly warm but no longer hot. Use the handle of a wooden spoon or a large straw to make evenly spaced holes across the surface.
- Chop the apple pieces in the pie filling into smaller pieces for more even distribution. Spoon or spread the filling over the cake, pressing some of the apples and filling into the holes.
- Pour about 1/2 cup of caramel sauce over the apple layer, guiding some sauce into the holes. Allow the cake to cool completely before adding the whipped topping.
- Spread the thawed whipped topping over the cooled cake in an even layer. Drizzle the surface with additional caramel sauce and sprinkle with chopped pecans or walnuts, if desired.
- Refrigerate the finished cake for at least 1 hour before slicing. For the cleanest pieces and fullest flavor, chill it for several hours or overnight.
Notes
Poke the holes while the cake is slightly warm, but do not add the whipped topping until the cake is completely cool. Chop the apple pie filling before spreading it so the fruit is easier to distribute and press into the holes.
