Step-by-Step
- Lightly grease a 6-quart slow cooker with nonstick spray or butter.
- Spoon the two cans of cherry pie filling evenly across the bottom of the slow cooker.
- Spread the undrained crushed pineapple over the cherry layer.
- Sprinkle the dry yellow cake mix evenly over the fruit. Do not stir the layers together.
- Drizzle the melted butter gradually over as much of the cake mix as possible, then add the chopped nuts if using.
- Cover and cook on HIGH for 2–3 hours, until the fruit bubbles and the cake topping is set with lightly browned edges.
- Turn off the slow cooker and let the dessert stand uncovered for 10–15 minutes before serving.
Notes
Keep the pineapple undrained because its liquid helps soften the dry cake mix. The topping will be softer than a conventional oven-baked dump cake because the slow-cooker lid retains moisture. For a LOW setting, cook for approximately 4–5 hours. Avoid opening the lid during cooking.
