Step-by-Step
- Combine the sugar and 1 cup water in a small saucepan over medium heat. Stir until the sugar completely dissolves, which should take about 3–5 minutes, and avoid boiling the syrup for an extended time.
- Remove the saucepan from the heat and allow the simple syrup to cool to room temperature. Cooling prevents the syrup from warming the lemonade and helps preserve the fresh flavor of the berries and lemon.
- Puree the mixed berries in a blender or food processor until smooth. For a cleaner texture, pour the puree through a fine-mesh sieve and press gently with a spoon to remove raspberry and strawberry seeds.
- Add the berry puree, cooled simple syrup, freshly squeezed lemon juice, and 5 cups cold water to a large pitcher. Stir thoroughly until the color is even and all ingredients are well combined.
- Taste the lemonade before chilling and adjust it if needed. Add a little more water if it tastes too strong, or add extra sugar syrup if the lemon flavor is too tart.
- Chill the pitcher for 30 minutes to 1 hour, then pour the lemonade over ice. Add fresh berries and lemon slices just before serving for a colorful garnish.
Notes
Freshly squeezed lemon juice gives the best flavor. Chill the lemonade before adding ice so the drink does not become diluted too quickly. The strained berry puree produces the smoothest result, especially when raspberries are included.
