Red, White, and Blue Berry Trifle

A festive no-bake berry trifle layered with angel food cake, fresh strawberries, blueberries, and a fluffy cream-cheese whipped-cream filling. Chill it for at least 1 hour before serving for the best texture.
Prep Time 25 minutes
Total Time 1 minute
Servings: 10 servings

Ingredients

Cake and Berries
  • 1 whole cake, 12-16 ounces Prepared angel food cake, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 2 pints, about 4 cups Fresh blueberries
  • 2 pints, about 4 cups Fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced
White Filling
  • 8 ounces Cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup Granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon Vanilla extract
  • 1 pint, 2 cups Heavy whipping cream, well chilled

Method

Step-by-Step
  1. Wash the strawberries and blueberries, then dry them thoroughly. Hull and slice the strawberries, and leave the blueberries whole.
  2. Beat the softened cream cheese, granulated sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth and creamy. Scrape the sides of the bowl as needed so the mixture has no noticeable lumps.
  3. In a separate chilled bowl, whip the cold heavy cream to medium-stiff peaks. Add the whipped cream to the cream-cheese mixture and fold gently until the white filling is light and evenly combined.
  4. Place approximately one-third of the angel food cake cubes in the bottom of a large trifle bowl. Spread about one-third of the white filling over the cake, followed by one-third of the sliced strawberries and blueberries.
  5. Repeat the cake, cream, strawberry, and blueberry layers twice more. Arrange the remaining berries on top so the finished dessert clearly shows its red, white, and blue colors.
  6. Cover the trifle and refrigerate it for at least 1 hour before serving. For the best cake texture, serve it the same day and avoid keeping it overnight.

Notes

Dry the berries very well to help prevent soggy cake. Chill the mixing bowl and beaters before whipping the cream, and fold gently to keep the filling light. The homemade filling may be replaced with two 8-ounce tubs of thawed whipped topping, or a 3.4-ounce package of instant vanilla pudding mixed with milk may be added for a thicker filling. Pound cake can replace angel food cake for a richer dessert.
