Ingredients

Cupcakes
  • 1 15.25-ounce box Devil’s-food or chocolate cake mix
  • 1 3.4-ounce package Instant chocolate pudding mix
  • 4 Large eggs
  • 1 cup Sour cream
  • 1/2 cup Vegetable oil
  • 1/2 cup Water
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract
  • 12-16 bars, or approximately 2 cups Fun-size Milky Way bars, chopped
Frosting
  • 8-10 bars Fun-size Milky Way bars, chopped
  • 1/4 cup Unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons Milk or evaporated milk
  • 2 cups Confectioners’ sugar, sifted
  • 1/2 teaspoon Vanilla extract
  • 1-2 tablespoons Additional milk, as needed

Method

Step-by-Step
  1. Heat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line two 12-cup muffin pans with paper liners.
  2. Beat the cake mix, pudding mix, eggs, sour cream, oil, water, and vanilla in a large bowl until smooth, about 1–2 minutes.
  3. Fold in the chopped Milky Way bars, then fill the liners about two-thirds full.
  4. Bake for 18–22 minutes, checking the cake portion with a toothpick in more than one spot. Cool in the pans for 5–10 minutes, then transfer to a rack and cool completely.
  5. Melt the frosting Milky Way bars, butter, and milk in a saucepan over low heat, stirring frequently. Cool until lukewarm, then beat in the confectioners’ sugar and vanilla; add additional milk a teaspoon at a time until spreadable.
  6. Frost the completely cooled cupcakes and garnish with extra chopped Milky Way pieces if desired.

Notes

Chill or briefly freeze the candy bars before chopping. Cool the melted-candy mixture before adding confectioners’ sugar so the frosting can set properly. Reserve a few candy pieces for topping if you want a stronger candy-bar finish.
