Step-by-Step
- Heat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
- Rub the orange zest into the granulated sugar, then cream it with the softened butter for 2–3 minutes, until light and fluffy.
- Beat in the egg and 2 tablespoons of fresh orange juice until evenly combined.
- Whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture and mix just until a soft dough forms.
- Cover and chill the dough for about 30 minutes if it is too soft to scoop.
- Drop rounded tablespoons of dough onto the prepared sheets, spacing them about 2 inches apart. Flatten each mound slightly if desired.
- Bake for 10–12 minutes, until the edges are set and the bottoms are lightly golden while the centers remain fairly pale and soft.
- Cool the cookies on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer them to a rack to cool completely.
- Whisk the confectioners’ sugar, orange juice, orange zest, and optional salt into a smooth, thick glaze. Add juice a few drops at a time if needed.
- Spread or drizzle the glaze over the completely cooled cookies, then let it set for 20–30 minutes.
Notes
Use fresh orange zest and juice for the best flavor. Measure flour by weight or spoon it into measuring cups and level it. Store glazed cookies in an airtight container once the glaze has set.
