Ingredients

Cookie Dough
  • 1 cup (226 g) Unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup (200 g) Packed light brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup (100 g) Granulated sugar
  • 2 eggs Large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract
  • 2 1/4 cups (281 g) All-purpose flour, spooned and leveled
  • 1 teaspoon Baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon Fine salt
Mix-Ins
  • 1 1/2 cups (about 255 g) Red and green chocolate candies, such as Christmas M&M’S
Optional Additions
  • 1/2-1 cup Chocolate chips
Optional Garnish
  • As needed Extra red and green chocolate candies for topping

Method

Step-by-Step
  1. Heat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. Whisk the flour, baking soda, and salt together in a medium bowl.
  3. In a separate bowl, beat the softened butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar for 2–3 minutes, until creamy and smooth.
  4. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then mix in the vanilla extract.
  5. Add the dry ingredients and mix only until no dry flour remains. Fold in the M&M’S and optional chocolate chips, reserving a small handful of candies for decorating.
  6. Scoop approximately 2 tablespoons of dough per cookie onto the prepared baking sheets, leaving about 2 inches between portions.
  7. Bake immediately, or chill the scooped dough for 30 minutes to 2 hours if you prefer thicker cookies.
  8. Bake for 10–12 minutes per tray, until the edges are lightly golden and the centers still look slightly soft. Add extra candies to the warm cookies if desired, cool on the sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a rack.

Notes

Do not overbake; the centers finish setting as the cookies cool. Chilled dough helps reduce spreading and may need an extra minute or two in the oven. Store completely cooled cookies in an airtight container.
