Step-by-Step
- Sift the powdered sugar and unsweetened cocoa powder into a large bowl. This removes lumps and helps the finished mix dissolve smoothly.
- Whisk in the dry milk powder and fine salt until the ingredients are evenly distributed.
- Stir in the mini semisweet chocolate chips, if using. For an especially smooth drink, pulse the completed mix briefly in a food processor to finely chop the chips.
- Transfer the dry mix to an airtight jar or container. Store it at room temperature for up to 2–3 months.
- For one serving, heat 1 cup milk until steaming but not boiling. Whisk in 1/3 cup hot chocolate mix until completely dissolved and creamy, then serve immediately.
Notes
Whole milk makes the richest drink, but skim milk and nondairy milk also work. For café-style richness, replace 1–2 tablespoons of the milk with heavy cream or use a combination of milk and half-and-half. Chocolate chips melt most readily when whisked into very hot milk.
