Homemade DIY Hot Chocolate Mix Recipe

A simple make-ahead hot chocolate mix made with cocoa, powdered sugar, dry milk powder, salt, and optional mini chocolate chips. Mix 1/3 cup of the blend with hot milk for a creamy homemade drink in about 5 minutes.
Prep Time 10 minutes
Total Time 15 minutes
Servings: 10 servings

Ingredients

Dry Hot Chocolate Mix
  • 1 cup Powdered sugar
  • 1 cup Unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 cup Dry milk powder
  • 1/2 cup Mini semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 teaspoon Fine salt
For One Serving
  • 1/3 cup Prepared hot chocolate mix
  • 1 cup Milk

Method

Step-by-Step
  1. Sift the powdered sugar and unsweetened cocoa powder into a large bowl. This removes lumps and helps the finished mix dissolve smoothly.
  2. Whisk in the dry milk powder and fine salt until the ingredients are evenly distributed.
  3. Stir in the mini semisweet chocolate chips, if using. For an especially smooth drink, pulse the completed mix briefly in a food processor to finely chop the chips.
  4. Transfer the dry mix to an airtight jar or container. Store it at room temperature for up to 2–3 months.
  5. For one serving, heat 1 cup milk until steaming but not boiling. Whisk in 1/3 cup hot chocolate mix until completely dissolved and creamy, then serve immediately.

Notes

Whole milk makes the richest drink, but skim milk and nondairy milk also work. For café-style richness, replace 1–2 tablespoons of the milk with heavy cream or use a combination of milk and half-and-half. Chocolate chips melt most readily when whisked into very hot milk.
