Step-by-Step
- Heat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 9-by-13-inch baking pan with parchment paper, leaving a little overhang for easy lifting, or lightly grease the pan.
- Beat the softened butter and firmly packed light brown sugar until smooth and creamy. Mix in the egg yolk and vanilla extract until well combined.
- Gradually add the all-purpose flour, mixing only until a soft dough forms. Press the dough evenly into the prepared pan.
- Bake for 20–25 minutes, or until the edges are lightly browned and the center is set.
- Immediately sprinkle the semisweet chocolate chips over the hot crust. Let them stand for several minutes to soften, then spread the melted chocolate evenly across the surface.
- Sprinkle the chopped walnuts over the chocolate and gently press them in so they stay in place.
- Cool the bars completely for 45–60 minutes before lifting them from the pan and cutting them into 24–36 bars.
Notes
Use softened butter rather than melted butter so the crust keeps its texture and does not spread unevenly. For deeper flavor, toast the walnuts before chopping and allow them to cool before adding them to the chocolate. Store the cooled bars in an airtight container.
