Step-by-Step
- Heat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a 9 x 13-inch baking dish.
- Brown the ground beef and diced onion in a large skillet over medium-high heat for about 6–8 minutes, breaking the meat into small pieces until it is no longer pink.
- Add the minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds. Drain excess fat if necessary.
- Stir in the condensed cream of mushroom soup, sour cream, Worcestershire sauce, salt, black pepper, and frozen mixed vegetables until evenly combined.
- Stir in 1/2 cup of the shredded cheddar cheese.
- Spread the beef mixture evenly in the prepared baking dish and arrange the frozen tater tots in a single layer over the top.
- Bake uncovered for 40–45 minutes, until the filling is bubbling and the tater tots are browned and crisp.
- Sprinkle the remaining 1/2 cup cheddar over the casserole and bake for another 5–10 minutes, until the cheese melts. Rest for 5 minutes before serving.
Notes
Keep the tater tots frozen and arrange them in a single layer for the crispiest topping. Bake on the upper-middle oven rack and do not cover the dish unless the tots are browning too quickly; in that case, loosely tent it near the end.
