Step-by-Step
- Lightly coat a 5- to 6-quart slow cooker with nonstick spray. Spread both cans of cherry pie filling evenly over the bottom.
- Sprinkle the dry yellow cake mix evenly over the cherry layer. Do not stir the cake mix and cherries together.
- Drizzle the melted butter over the entire surface of the dry cake mix, covering as much of the mix as possible. Sprinkle chopped pecans or walnuts over the top if using.
- Cover the slow cooker and cook on HIGH for about 2 hours, or on LOW for 3 to 4 hours, depending on the cooker. The dessert is ready when the top is set and lightly golden and the cherry filling is bubbling.
- Turn off the slow cooker and let the cake rest for 10 to 15 minutes before serving. Spoon the warm dessert into bowls and top with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
Notes
Melted butter provides the most even topping coverage. Avoid lifting the lid during cooking because lost heat can extend the cooking time. If condensation makes the topping wet, briefly vent the lid near the end or place a clean paper towel under the lid, making sure it does not touch the heating element.
