Ingredients

Cupcakes
  • 1 box, approximately 15.25 oz Betty Crocker Super Moist white cake mix
  • As directed on cake-mix package Water
  • As directed on cake-mix package Vegetable oil
  • As directed on cake-mix package Egg whites
Frosting and Decorations
  • 1 16 oz container Betty Crocker Rich & Creamy vanilla frosting
  • As needed Red food color
  • 24 Large conversation-heart candies
  • 1 tube, approximately 0.68 oz Betty Crocker black decorating gel

Method

Step-by-Step
  1. Heat the oven to 350°F and line 24 standard muffin cups with paper baking liners. Prepare the white cake mix according to the directions printed on the specific box, using the listed water, vegetable oil, and egg whites.
  2. Divide the batter evenly among the 24 liners, filling each cup about two-thirds full. Bake for 18–23 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  3. Cool the cupcakes in the pans for several minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack. Let them cool completely before frosting.
  4. Tint the vanilla frosting pink with a small amount of red food color, adding it gradually until the desired pastel shade is reached. Frost each completely cooled cupcake.
  5. Place one large conversation-heart candy on each frosted cupcake. Use the black decorating gel to write a name, initials, or short personalized message on every candy heart.

Notes

Follow the water, oil, and egg-white amounts printed on the cake-mix box because quantities can vary by package size and product version. Cool cupcakes completely before frosting so the frosting stays firm and the candy hearts do not slide. Add red food color gradually because a tiny amount creates pastel pink frosting.
