Ingredients

Brownies
  • 1 box, about 18-19 ounces Fudge brownie mix
  • 2 eggs, or amount listed on package Large eggs
  • 1/2 cup, or amount listed on package Vegetable oil
  • 1/4 cup, or amount listed on package Water
Peanut-Butter Fudge Topping
  • 1/2 cup Unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup Creamy peanut butter
  • 1/4 cup Milk
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract
  • 3 cups Sifted confectioners’ sugar
Optional Garnishes
  • 1/2 cup Semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1/3 cup Chopped roasted peanuts

Method

Step-by-Step
  1. Heat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9 x 13-inch baking pan or line it with parchment paper.
  2. Prepare the fudge brownie mix according to the package directions, using the listed eggs, oil, and water amounts. Spread the batter evenly in the prepared pan.
  3. Bake for approximately 25–30 minutes, or until the edges are set and a toothpick inserted near the center comes out with moist crumbs. Do not overbake.
  4. While the brownies cool, melt the butter and peanut butter together in a saucepan over low heat. Stir until smooth, then remove the saucepan from the heat.
  5. Stir the milk and vanilla into the warm peanut-butter mixture. Gradually beat in the sifted confectioners’ sugar until the topping is smooth.
  6. Spread the peanut-butter fudge mixture over the completely cooled brownies. Sprinkle with semisweet chocolate chips or chopped roasted peanuts, if desired.
  7. Chill the brownies until the topping is firm, about 30 minutes for cleaner slicing. Cut into squares with a lightly greased sharp knife.

Notes

Brownie mixes differ, so follow the specific package directions for the brownie batter rather than relying only on the common sample amounts. Store covered in the refrigerator if you prefer a firm topping, and let the brownies sit briefly at room temperature before serving.
