Step-by-Step
- Heat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line one or two baking sheets with parchment paper.
- Stir the Nutella and egg together in a mixing bowl until the mixture is smooth and evenly combined.
- Add the flour, baking powder, and optional salt. Mix only until no dry flour remains, taking care not to overmix.
- Fold in the semi-sweet chocolate chips if using them.
- Chill the dough for 20–30 minutes if it feels sticky or too soft to scoop comfortably.
- Scoop rounded tablespoons of dough onto the prepared baking sheets, leaving about 2 inches (5 cm) between cookies. Gently round or flatten the dough if desired.
- Bake for 10–12 minutes, until the edges look set while the centers still appear slightly soft.
- Cool the cookies on the baking sheet for 5–10 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack.
Notes
Do not overbake because the cookies continue to set as they cool. Weighing the flour is preferable, since too much flour can make the cookies dry and cakey. For thicker cookies, chill shaped dough balls for an additional 10–15 minutes before baking. Store cooled cookies in an airtight container.
