Ingredients

Cheese
  • 8 oz Brie or Camembert
  • 8 oz Sharp cheddar
  • 8 oz Manchego, Gouda, or another firm cheese
Meat
  • 8 oz Sliced salami
  • 8 oz Prosciutto
Crunchy Items
  • 8 oz Crackers, using two or three varieties
Fresh Produce
  • 1 lb Seedless grapes
  • 2 whole Apples or pears, thinly sliced
Savory Additions
  • 1 cup Olives
  • 1 cup Roasted or spiced nuts
  • 4 oz Cornichons or other small pickles
Sweet Additions
  • 1 cup Dried apricots, dates, or cranberries
  • 1/2 cup Fig jam or fruit preserves
  • 1/2 cup Honey
Optional New Year's Eve Treats
  • 1 cup Chocolate-covered nuts, truffles, or other bite-size sweets

Method

Step-by-Step
  1. Place small bowls on a large wooden board, slate, or serving platter for the olives, pickles, fig jam, honey, and nuts.
  2. Arrange the Brie or Camembert in its own area, leaving it whole or cutting a small wedge. Slice the sharp cheddar and firm cheese into thin pieces or bite-size cubes, then place them in separate areas.
  3. Fold or loosely roll the salami and prosciutto, and arrange them near the cheeses so guests can easily build bites.
  4. Add the crackers in several small groups around the board rather than creating one large pile.
  5. Fill open spaces with grapes, thinly sliced apples or pears, dried fruit, and optional chocolate-covered treats or truffles.
  6. Set the board out about 30 minutes before serving so the cheese can develop better flavor. Add the crackers shortly before guests arrive to keep them crisp, and serve the board at room temperature.

Notes

Use contrasting colors and textures throughout the arrangement. Place duplicate portions of popular items, especially crackers, meat, and cheese, in more than one area so guests do not have to reach across the board. Honey may be served in a small bowl or drizzled over the Brie just before serving.
