Ingredients

Pumpkin Spice Sauce
  • 1 cup Granulated sugar
  • 1 cup Water
  • 1/3 to 1/2 cup Pure pumpkin puree, not pumpkin pie filling
  • 2 sticks Cinnamon sticks
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons Ground cinnamon, alternative to cinnamon sticks
  • 1 teaspoon Ground ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon Ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon Ground cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon Ground allspice, optional
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract
  • 1/8 teaspoon Fine salt

Method

Step-by-Step
  1. Combine the sugar, water, pumpkin puree, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, cloves, allspice, and salt in a small saucepan.
  2. Warm the mixture over medium heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves completely.
  3. Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer, but do not let it boil vigorously. Simmer for 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until fragrant and slightly thickened.
  4. Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. For a smooth sauce, remove the cinnamon sticks if used and strain the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve. Cool completely, then transfer to a clean airtight jar or bottle and refrigerate.

Notes

Use pure pumpkin puree rather than pumpkin pie filling. Shake or stir before each use because pumpkin solids and spices may settle. Refrigerate for about 1–2 weeks.
