Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 1 pound Pizza dough, homemade or refrigerated
  • 1/2 cup Pizza sauce, plus more for serving
  • 1 1/2 cups Shredded low-moisture mozzarella cheese
  • 3-4 ounces Sliced pepperoni
  • 1 tablespoon, optional Grated Parmesan cheese
Crust Finish
  • 1 large Large egg, beaten
  • 1/2 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1/4 teaspoon, optional Garlic powder
Garnish
  • 1 tablespoon, optional Fresh parsley or basil, chopped

Method

Step-by-Step
  1. Heat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Roll the pizza dough into an approximately 10 x 14-inch rectangle and transfer it to the prepared baking sheet.
  3. Spread the pizza sauce down the center third of the dough, leaving the top and bottom edges clear. Add the mozzarella, pepperoni, Parmesan, and any optional toppings.
  4. Cut diagonal strips about 1 inch wide into both sides of the dough, stopping at the filling. Keep the top and bottom sections intact.
  5. Fold the top and bottom dough over the filling, then cross the side strips over the center in an alternating pattern. Tuck or pinch the ends closed.
  6. Brush the braid with beaten egg and sprinkle it with Italian seasoning and optional garlic powder.
  7. Bake for 18 to 25 minutes, until golden brown and the cheese is melted. Rest for 5 minutes, garnish with parsley or basil if desired, and slice.

Notes

Use low-moisture mozzarella and avoid excess sauce or watery vegetables. If the assembled braid becomes difficult to handle, chill or briefly freeze it for 10 to 15 minutes before baking. For a softer, richer crust, brush the baked braid with melted garlic butter.
