Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 6 tablespoons (85 g) Unsalted butter
  • 1 cup (200 g) Packed light brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) Heavy cream or heavy whipping cream
  • 1/2 teaspoon Fine salt
  • 1 teaspoon Pure vanilla extract

Method

Step-by-Step
  1. Melt the butter in a medium, heavy-bottomed saucepan over medium heat.
  2. Add the packed brown sugar, heavy cream, and salt. Whisk until the sugar is moistened and the mixture looks smooth.
  3. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, then cook for 4–5 minutes, stirring or whisking occasionally. Keep the heat moderate and do not allow the sauce to boil aggressively.
  4. Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. Serve the sauce warm for a pourable consistency, or let it cool to make it thicker.

Notes

Use a heavy saucepan and medium heat to help prevent scorching. Keep the simmer controlled because prolonged boiling can make the sauce overly thick or grainy. For deeper butterscotch flavor, use dark brown sugar instead of light brown sugar.
