Step-by-Step
- Heat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
- Whisk the flour, baking powder, salt, and nutmeg together in a medium bowl.
- Beat the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar for 2–3 minutes, until light and creamy.
- Beat in the egg and vanilla, then add the eggnog and mix until combined. The mixture may look slightly curdled.
- Gradually mix in the dry ingredients just until no flour streaks remain. Do not overmix.
- Chill the dough for 30–60 minutes if it is soft or sticky and spreads easily.
- Drop rounded tablespoons of dough onto the prepared baking sheets, leaving about 2 inches between cookies.
- Bake for 10–12 minutes, until the edges are set and the centers look slightly soft. Keep the cookies pale rather than deeply browned.
- Cool the cookies on the baking sheet for about 5 minutes, then transfer them to a rack to cool completely.
- Whisk the confectioners' sugar, eggnog, and nutmeg until smooth, adding a little more eggnog if needed. Drizzle or spread the glaze over completely cooled cookies, then finish with sprinkles or a small pinch of nutmeg.
Notes
Use freshly grated nutmeg for the strongest holiday flavor. Chill the dough if it spreads easily, and do not overbake because the centers firm as the cookies cool. Store completely cooled, decorated cookies in an airtight container.
