Step-by-Step
- Peel, core, and slice 8 apples evenly into wedges or 1/2-inch slices.
- Place the apples in the crockpot, then sprinkle the packed light brown sugar and ground cinnamon evenly over them.
- Distribute the sliced or cubed unsalted butter over the top of the apples.
- Cover and cook on LOW for 3–4 hours or HIGH for 1 1/2–2 hours, checking early because slow cookers vary.
- Stir gently once or twice during cooking, stopping when the apples are tender but still retain some shape.
- Serve warm as a side dish, over pancakes or waffles, with pork, or with vanilla ice cream.
Notes
Use firm apples such as Granny Smith, Golden Delicious, Fuji, or a combination. Do not add water; the apples release enough moisture as they cook. Stir gently and infrequently to keep the slices from breaking down into applesauce.
