Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 2 medium Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and cut into 8 wedges each
  • 2 8-ounce cans Refrigerated crescent-roll dough
  • 1 cup Butter, unsalted or salted
  • 1 1/2 cups Granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups Lemon-lime soda, such as 7-Up or Sprite
Optional
  • As desired Ground cinnamon for sprinkling

Method

Step-by-Step
  1. Heat the oven to 350°F and grease a 9-by-13-inch baking dish. Peel and core the apples, then cut each apple into 8 wedges for 16 pieces total.
  2. Separate both cans of crescent dough into 16 triangles. Place one apple wedge at the wide end of each triangle and roll the dough around the apple, covering it as completely as possible.
  3. Arrange the wrapped apples in the prepared baking dish. Leave them in a single layer so the dough has room to brown while the sauce bubbles around the dumplings.
  4. Melt the butter in a saucepan over gentle heat. Add the sugar and vanilla, stirring just until combined; do not boil the mixture, and do not worry if it remains slightly grainy.
  5. Pour the butter-and-sugar mixture evenly over the dumplings. Pour the lemon-lime soda around the sides and between the dumplings, not directly over the crescent dough.
  6. Bake uncovered at 350°F for 40 to 45 minutes, or until the crescent dough is golden brown and the sauce is bubbling. Let the dish rest for 5 to 10 minutes before serving, then spoon the buttery syrup over each dumpling.

Notes

Firm Granny Smith apples hold their shape well and balance the sweet sauce. Do not boil the butter mixture or pour the soda over the dough. A 12-ounce can of Mountain Dew may be used as a variation, but the listed formula uses 1 1/2 cups of lemon-lime soda.
