Ingredients

Bread Boat
  • 1 16-20 ounce loaf Round unsliced French, sourdough, or Italian loaf
Creamy Dried Beef Dip
  • 16 ounces Cream cheese, softened
  • 16 ounces Sour cream
  • 5 ounces Dried beef, finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup Green onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon Garlic powder
  • 1 cup Shredded cheddar cheese, optional
  • to taste Black pepper
For Serving
  • as needed Crackers, vegetable sticks, or reserved bread pieces

Method

Step-by-Step
  1. Heat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Slice the top from the loaf, keeping it large enough to replace as a lid, and set the top aside.
  2. Hollow out the loaf carefully, leaving a shell about 1 inch thick. Cut the removed bread into cubes and reserve them for dipping or toasting.
  3. If the dried beef is especially salty, briefly rinse it under cold water and pat it dry. Chop it finely so the flavor distributes evenly through the dip.
  4. Beat the softened cream cheese and sour cream together until smooth. Stir in the dried beef, green onions, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, black pepper, and cheddar cheese if using.
  5. Spoon the mixture into the hollow bread loaf and replace the bread top. Wrap the loaf loosely in aluminum foil.
  6. Bake for 25 to 35 minutes, until the dip is hot throughout and lightly bubbling around the edges. Unwrap the loaf for the final 5 to 10 minutes if you prefer a firmer or lightly browned top.
  7. Serve immediately with the reserved bread cubes, crackers, and vegetable sticks. Toast the bread cubes on a sheet pan at 350°F for 8 to 10 minutes if you want sturdier dippers.

Notes

Soften the cream cheese fully before mixing to prevent lumps. Dried beef and Worcestershire sauce are both salty, so taste the finished mixture before adding any salt. For a cold version, chill the mixed dip for at least 2 hours and serve it in the bread boat without baking.
