Step-by-Step
- Heat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a 12-cup muffin pan with paper liners or grease the cups thoroughly.
- Make the streusel by combining the flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Stir in the melted butter until coarse crumbs form, then set the topping aside.
- Whisk the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt together in a medium bowl.
- In a separate bowl, whisk the melted, slightly cooled butter with the granulated sugar, brown sugar, eggs, vanilla, sour cream, and milk.
- Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and stir just until no dry flour remains. The batter should be thick and slightly lumpy.
- Divide the batter among the muffin cups, filling each about two-thirds to three-quarters full. Sprinkle the streusel evenly over the tops.
- Bake for 18–22 minutes, until the muffins are lightly golden and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean or with a few moist crumbs.
- Cool the muffins in the pan for about 5 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to finish cooling.
Notes
Do not overmix the batter, because excessive stirring can make the muffins dense. For larger streusel clusters, squeeze portions of the crumb mixture together before scattering them over the batter. Store cooled muffins in an airtight container at room temperature and enjoy within a few days.
