Step-by-Step
- Heat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease an 8 x 8-inch baking dish or a similar 1 1/2-quart dish.
- In a mixing bowl, stir together the softened cream cheese, sour cream if using, Italian seasoning, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper until smooth.
- Fold in the shredded chicken, 1/2 cup marinara, 1 cup mozzarella, and 1/2 cup Parmesan until the mixture is evenly combined.
- Spread the chicken mixture into the prepared baking dish, then spoon the remaining 1/2 cup marinara over the surface.
- Sprinkle on the optional extra mozzarella, Parmesan, and Italian-seasoned breadcrumbs or panko.
- Bake uncovered for 20 to 25 minutes, until the dip is hot in the center and bubbling around the edges. Broil for 1 to 2 minutes at the end if you prefer a more browned cheese topping.
- Let the dip rest for about 5 minutes, garnish with chopped parsley or basil, and serve hot with sturdy dippers.
Notes
Soften the cream cheese fully, use low-moisture mozzarella, and drain excess liquid from the chicken or marinara. Avoid overbaking so the dip remains creamy. Refrigerate leftovers and reheat gently until hot.
