Step-by-Step
- Shred the cooked chicken into bite-size pieces, removing skin, bones, and excess fat if using a rotisserie chicken.
- For shortcut gravy, stir the condensed cream of chicken soup, prepared chicken gravy, and chicken broth or water together in a saucepan. Warm over medium-low heat, stirring often, until smooth.
- Add the shredded chicken, black pepper, and optional butter to the warm gravy. Simmer gently for 5 to 8 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the chicken is hot and thoroughly coated.
- Toast the bread lightly if desired. Place one or two slices on each plate, spoon the chicken and gravy over the top, and serve with mashed potatoes and peas or another vegetable.
Notes
Keep the gravy slightly thinner than normal because the bread and mashed potatoes absorb sauce. Do not boil vigorously, or the gravy may become too thick or separate. For a handheld sandwich, use toasted hamburger buns or hoagie rolls and reduce the gravy slightly before serving.
