Step-by-Step
- Heat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Pour the melted butter into an 8-inch or 9-inch square baking dish, without greasing the dish separately.
- Whisk the flour, sugar, and baking powder together in a mixing bowl. Stir in the milk just until a smooth batter forms, taking care not to overmix.
- Pour the batter over the melted butter in the baking dish. Do not stir the batter and butter together.
- Spoon the cherry pie filling evenly over the batter. Keep the layers undisturbed so the batter can rise around the fruit as it bakes.
- Bake for 45 to 50 minutes, until the top and edges are golden brown and the cobbler is set. Cool for 10 to 15 minutes before serving.
Notes
Use cherry pie filling rather than plain canned cherries because the filling provides the syrup, sweetness, and moisture this cobbler needs. Keep the batter, butter, and fruit in separate layers, and let the baked cobbler rest briefly so the filling thickens and portions are easier to serve.
