Ingredients

Cake Squares
  • 1 15.25-ounce box (432 g) Yellow or white cake mix
  • 2 eggs Large eggs
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) Neutral vegetable oil
  • 1 21-ounce can (595 g) Cherry pie filling
Optional Add-In
  • 1/2 cup Chopped walnuts or pecans
Optional Glaze
  • 1 cup (120 g) Confectioners' sugar
  • 1-2 tablespoons Milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon Vanilla extract

Method

Step-by-Step
  1. Heat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-by-13-inch baking pan or line it with parchment paper.
  2. Stir the cake mix, eggs, and vegetable oil together just until a thick batter forms. Avoid overmixing.
  3. Spread the batter evenly into the prepared pan, working it all the way into the corners.
  4. Spoon the cherry pie filling over the batter and gently spread it toward the edges. Sprinkle with walnuts or pecans if desired.
  5. Bake for 30–35 minutes, until the cake portion is set and lightly golden. A toothpick inserted into the cake area should come out with moist crumbs rather than wet batter.
  6. Cool completely for 20–30 minutes before cutting. For the optional glaze, whisk confectioners' sugar, milk, and vanilla together, then drizzle it over the cooled squares.

Notes

Use cherry pie filling rather than plain canned cherries because pie filling contains the sugar and thickener needed for this dessert. Let the cake cool completely so the cherry layer firms and the squares cut cleanly.
