Easy Cheesy Tennessee Onions

Sweet onions bake until tender beneath a bubbling blend of Parmesan, cheddar, and mozzarella. This simple Southern-style side dish takes about 45 to 55 minutes from start to finish.

Servings: 6 servings

Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 3-4 Large sweet onions, preferably Vidalia, peeled
Seasoned Butter
  • 4 tablespoons Unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon Garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon Dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon Black pepper
Cheese Topping
  • 1/2 cup Finely shredded Parmesan cheese
  • 1 cup Shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup Shredded mozzarella cheese

Method

Step-by-Step
  1. Heat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a 9-by-13-inch baking dish.
  2. Slice the peeled onions into approximately 1/4-inch rings and gently separate the rings.
  3. Arrange the onion rings evenly in the prepared baking dish, keeping the layer as level as possible.
  4. Drizzle the melted butter over the onions, then sprinkle evenly with garlic powder, dried oregano, salt, and black pepper.
  5. Scatter the Parmesan, cheddar, and mozzarella evenly over the seasoned onions.
  6. Bake uncovered for 35 to 40 minutes, until the onions are tender and the cheese is melted, bubbling, and lightly browned.
  7. Let the dish rest for about 5 minutes before serving so the cheese settles slightly and the hot onion juices are easier to spoon.

Notes

Use Vidalia, Walla Walla, or another mild sweet onion. Shredding cheese from blocks usually helps it melt smoothly. For deeper browning, broil for 1 to 2 minutes at the end while watching closely.
