Step-by-Step
- Heat the oven to 350°F and lightly grease a 9 x 13-inch baking dish.
- Spread both cans of apple pie filling evenly across the bottom of the prepared dish.
- Drizzle the caramel sauce over the apples without stirring deeply, keeping the apple and caramel layers distinct.
- Sprinkle the dry yellow cake mix evenly over the caramel and apples. Do not prepare the cake mix according to the package directions.
- Scatter the chopped pecans over the dry cake mix, then slowly pour the melted butter over the surface, covering as much of the mix as possible.
- Bake for 45–50 minutes, until the top is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbling around the edges.
- Let the cobbler stand for 10–15 minutes before serving warm with vanilla ice cream.
Notes
Caramel bits can replace the caramel sauce; use about 11 ounces, although caramel sauce usually distributes more evenly and creates a softer filling. For a less sweet cobbler, use ¾ cup caramel sauce and unsalted pecans. Toasting the pecans briefly before adding them gives them a deeper flavor and better crunch.
