Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 2 21-ounce cans Apple pie filling
  • 1 15.25-ounce box Yellow cake mix or spice cake mix
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) Unsalted butter, very cold
  • 1/2 to 1 cup, divided Caramel sauce or caramel ice-cream topping
Optional Add-Ins
  • 1/2 cup Chopped pecans or walnuts
  • 1/2 teaspoon Ground cinnamon

Method

Step-by-Step
  1. Heat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a 9 x 13-inch baking dish. Spread both cans of apple pie filling evenly across the bottom.
  2. Sprinkle the cinnamon over the apples if desired, then drizzle about 1/2 cup caramel sauce across the filling. Reserve the remaining caramel for serving.
  3. Sprinkle the dry cake mix evenly over the apples and caramel. Do not stir the layers together, because the separate layers help create the proper dump-cake texture.
  4. Slice the very cold butter into thin pieces and arrange them over as much of the cake-mix surface as possible. Add the chopped pecans or walnuts if using.
  5. Bake for 45 to 55 minutes, until the top is golden brown and the apple filling bubbles around the edges. If dry cake-mix patches remain near the end, continue baking for a few additional minutes.
  6. Let the cake rest for 10 to 15 minutes before serving. Spoon it into bowls and finish with the reserved caramel sauce, vanilla ice cream, or whipped cream.

Notes

Keep the butter very cold and cover the cake mix as evenly as possible with thin butter slices. Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator and reheat individual servings gently before eating.
