Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 2 cans (20-21 ounces each) Apple pie filling
  • 1 box (about 15.25 ounces) Yellow cake mix
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) Unsalted butter, cut into thin slices or small pieces
Optional Ingredients
  • 1 teaspoon Ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup Chopped pecans or walnuts

Method

Step-by-Step
  1. Heat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a 9-by-13-inch baking dish. For easy cleanup and extra insurance against bubbling filling, place the dish on a foil-lined sheet pan.
  2. Spread both cans of apple pie filling evenly across the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Sprinkle the cinnamon over the apples if using.
  3. Sprinkle the dry yellow cake mix evenly over the apple pie filling. Do not stir the cake mix into the apples, because the dry layer needs to bake into the topping.
  4. Arrange the thin butter slices or small butter pieces across the entire surface of the cake mix. Add the chopped pecans or walnuts if desired.
  5. Bake for 45–55 minutes, until the top is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbling around the edges. Let the dessert stand for 10–15 minutes before serving.

Notes

Use canned apple pie filling rather than plain canned apples because the filling supplies the needed sweetness and moisture. Distribute the butter as evenly as possible so fewer dry cake-mix patches remain. Refrigerate leftovers and reheat individual portions gently before serving.
