Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 1 tablespoon Neutral cooking oil, such as canola or vegetable oil
  • 1 pound (450 g) Lean ground beef
Aromatics
  • 3 cloves Garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon Fresh ginger, finely grated or minced
Sauce
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) Low-sodium soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons Packed brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Toasted sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon Rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon Hoisin sauce, optional
  • 1/4 teaspoon Crushed red pepper flakes
Garnish and Serving
  • 2 green onions Green onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 teaspoon Sesame seeds
  • As needed Cooked white rice, brown rice, or noodles

Method

Step-by-Step
  1. Mix the soy sauce, brown sugar, toasted sesame oil, rice vinegar, hoisin sauce, and crushed red pepper flakes in a small bowl.
  2. Heat the neutral cooking oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook for 5 to 7 minutes, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned and no longer pink.
  3. Drain excess fat from the skillet if necessary. Add the minced garlic and ginger, then cook for 30 to 60 seconds, just until fragrant.
  4. Pour the sauce mixture into the skillet and stir well so the beef is evenly coated.
  5. Simmer for 2 to 4 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce slightly thickens and clings to the meat.
  6. Garnish with sliced green onions and sesame seeds. Serve the beef over cooked white rice, brown rice, or noodles.

Notes

Use lean or moderately lean beef and drain excess fat before adding the sauce. Add the garlic and ginger after the beef browns so they stay fragrant instead of burning. For more heat, add extra red pepper flakes or a little sriracha.
