Ingredients

Waffles
  • 2 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup Granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon Ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon Salt
  • 2 Large eggs
  • 1 3/4 cups Milk
  • 1/2 cup Unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract
  • 1 Large firm apple, peeled, cored, and finely diced
Glaze
  • 1 cup Powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons Milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon Vanilla extract

Method

Step-by-Step
  1. Preheat the waffle iron and lightly grease it. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk the eggs, milk, melted and slightly cooled butter, and vanilla extract until combined. Add the wet mixture to the dry ingredients and stir just until no dry streaks remain; a few small lumps are fine.
  3. Fold in the finely diced apple, making sure the pieces are distributed throughout the batter. Use apple pieces about 1/4 inch in size so they soften while the waffles cook and do not interfere with the waffle iron closing.
  4. Pour the recommended amount of batter into the hot waffle iron. Cook for approximately 3 to 5 minutes per waffle, or until the waffle is golden brown and crisp.
  5. Whisk the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract together in a small bowl until smooth. Drizzle the glaze over warm waffles and serve immediately.

Notes

Do not overmix the batter, or the waffles may become dense. For crispier waffles, transfer cooked waffles directly to a wire rack instead of stacking them. Granny Smith or another firm, tart apple works well.
