Step-by-Step
- Heat the oven to 350°F and grease a 9-by-13-inch baking dish. Peel and core the apples, then cut each apple into 8 wedges for 16 pieces total.
- Separate the crescent dough into triangles. Wrap one triangle around each apple wedge, keeping the dough snug but not stretched too thin, and arrange the dumplings in the prepared baking dish.
- Melt the butter in a saucepan over gentle heat. Stir in the sugar and vanilla just briefly; the sugar can remain slightly grainy rather than dissolving completely.
- Pour the butter mixture over the wrapped apples, distributing it as evenly as possible. Pour the soda around the dumplings, not directly over the dough tops, then sprinkle with cinnamon if using.
- Bake uncovered for 40 to 45 minutes, until the crescent tops are golden brown and the sauce is bubbling around the dumplings. Let the dessert stand for about 10 minutes before serving warm.
Notes
Use firm, tart Granny Smith apples because they hold their shape and balance the sweet sauce. Sprite, 7UP, or another lemon-lime soda may replace Mountain Dew. Pour the soda around the dumplings to help keep the tops from becoming soggy. Refrigerate leftovers and reheat gently before serving.
