Total Time 55 minutes
Servings: 12 servings

Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 2 21-ounce cans Apple pie filling
  • 1 box, about 15.25 ounces Yellow cake mix, dry
  • 1 cup, or 2 sticks Unsalted butter, very cold and thinly sliced
Optional Add-Ins
  • 1 teaspoon Ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup Chopped pecans or walnuts

Method

Step-by-Step
  1. Heat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a 9 x 13-inch baking dish.
  2. Spread both cans of apple pie filling evenly across the bottom of the prepared dish.
  3. Sprinkle the dry yellow cake mix evenly over the apples. Do not prepare the cake mix according to the package directions.
  4. If desired, sprinkle the cinnamon and chopped pecans or walnuts over the dry cake mix.
  5. Arrange the very cold butter slices across the entire surface, keeping the slices close together so the cake mix is well covered.
  6. Bake for 45–50 minutes, until the top is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbling around the edges.
  7. Cool the dump cake for 10–15 minutes before serving warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

Notes

Thinly slice the cold butter and distribute it edge to edge to help prevent dry patches of cake mix. For a less sweet dessert, use unsweetened or reduced-sugar apple pie filling if available, or stir chopped tart apples into the filling.
