Ingredients

Tuna Filling
  • 1 5-ounce can Tuna, drained well
  • 1/4 cup Mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon Finely diced celery
  • 1 tablespoon Finely diced red onion or green onion
  • 1 tablespoon Sweet pickle relish
  • 1/2 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1/8 teaspoon Salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon Black pepper
Sandwiches
  • 4 slices Sandwich bread, sourdough, white, or multigrain
  • 2 slices or about 2 ounces shredded Cheddar cheese
  • 1 tablespoon Softened butter or mayonnaise for coating bread

Method

Step-by-Step
  1. Drain the tuna thoroughly, pressing out excess liquid, and flake it into a mixing bowl.
  2. Stir in the mayonnaise, celery, onion, optional sweet pickle relish, optional Dijon mustard, salt, and black pepper until evenly combined.
  3. Divide the tuna mixture between two slices of bread and spread it into an even layer. Add one cheddar slice to each sandwich, then cover with the remaining bread.
  4. Lightly coat the outside of each sandwich with softened butter or mayonnaise. Preheat the air fryer to 350°F if your model requires preheating.
  5. Place the sandwiches in the air fryer basket in a single layer and cook for 3 to 4 minutes.
  6. Carefully turn the sandwiches and cook for another 2 to 4 minutes, until the bread is golden and the cheddar is melted. Serve hot.

Notes

Press the tuna very dry so the filling does not become watery. Avoid overfilling, and check the sandwiches early because air fryers and bread thickness vary. If the fan lifts the top bread slice, secure it with a toothpick during the first few minutes and remove the toothpick before serving.
