Step-by-Step
- Cut the bread into roughly 3/4-inch cubes. Slightly stale or day-old bread is ideal because it contains less moisture and becomes especially crisp.
- Place the bread cubes in a large bowl and drizzle with the olive oil or melted butter. Toss until the cubes are evenly coated.
- Sprinkle in the Italian seasoning, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Toss again so the seasonings cling to as many bread surfaces as possible.
- Preheat the air fryer to 350°F (175°C), if your model requires preheating. Arrange the seasoned bread cubes in a single layer in the basket.
- Air fry for 3 to 5 minutes, then shake the basket to turn and redistribute the cubes. Continue cooking for another 3 to 5 minutes, checking early because air fryers and bread types vary.
- Remove the croutons when they are golden brown and crisp. Cool completely before serving, since they become slightly crunchier as they cool.
Notes
Do not overcrowd the air fryer basket. Cook in batches if needed so the bread crisps instead of steaming. For richer croutons, use 2 to 3 tablespoons of butter. Store completely cooled croutons in an airtight container.
