- Let the butter soften until it is easily spreadable but not melted. Add the softened butter and prepared basil pesto to a small bowl, then stir or mash with a fork until evenly combined.
- Mix in the grated Parmesan and finely minced or grated garlic, if using. Taste the pesto butter and add a pinch of salt only if necessary.
- Serve immediately as a spread or topping, or transfer the mixture to parchment paper, roll it into a log, and refrigerate until firm.
Notes
Store tightly wrapped in the refrigerator for up to about 1 week, or freeze for up to 2–3 months. For brighter flavor, add a small squeeze of lemon juice. For stronger pesto flavor, use 1/3 cup pesto while keeping the butter at 1/2 cup.
